What is East Nashville?
Broadly speaking it's all of Nashville east of Downtown bound by the Cumberland River, I-24/65, and Briley Parkway. (This definition is frequently used by newscasters in reference to crime, and real estate agents borrowing the 'East Nashville' buzz)
Narrowly speaking, it can mean just the east side of Gallitan Rd south of Douglas (Edgefield, Lockeland Springs, East End, Eastwood Neighbors and Shelby Hills neighborhood).
On this website, the broad definition is used.
What's so great about East Nashville?
Its diversity and its liveability.
Diversity
Rich and poor
Want a beautiful, historic home near downtown with easy access to trendy restaurants and shops? Come to East Nashville.
Only make $800/month playing in a band? Need Section 8 housing? Can only afford a cheap house? Come to East Nashville.
Urban and green
It's city living, but old trees and parks provide greenery. Shelby Bottoms provides miles of protected forests, marshes, fields and green spaces.
Lifestyles and lifestages
Every people-group that doesn't feel comfortable or interested living in the other parts of Tennessee is represented in East Nashville. (And several groups that are comfortable in Tennessee as well).
Liveability
Walkable, bikeable
With grocery/convenience stores, restaurants, schools, and coffee shops located in the neighborhoods, East Nashville is very walkable for an American city. Most streets have sidewalks. Bikers enjoy the calmness of the traffic.
The traffic is calm because a) East Nashville is not on the way to anywhere, so there's not extra traffic, b) the streets are laid out in a grid (disperses traffic).
Front porch culture
You can see neighbors outside because they are hanging out on the front porch.
Small town feel inside a big city
Being across the river from downtown Nashville provides access to the jobs, services, destinations and attractions of a large city. Being enclosed by the Cumberland River creates the feel of a small town where you see your neighbors at the grocery store and coffee shop.
Cost of living
You can buy a house for $100,000 (but only in some parts of East Nashville).
You can get lunch for $5.
But it's not perfect
East Nashville isn't perfect. There is crime. There is a quiet friction between long-term residents and new residents. Nashville has its own set of issues including a struggling school system.
Come and see
Look around here at our community. And then come and visit. East Nashville is a much better physical place than an internet place.
