Inglewood

in.sign.logoInglewood has a long history, and a flexible name. Loosely, it can refer to all of East Nashville above Douglas street. Strictly, it refers to the neighborhood between Gallitan, Cahal and the Cumberland River.

Inglewood's streets curve and bend with moderate suburban homes, interspersed with corner stores and churches. Inglewood is the classic suburb for The Suburb arrived in the 70's-80's-90's.

Some Inglewood residents cite safety, kid-friendly, and affordability as their reasons for choosing Inglewood.

Location/Summary

On the north is Briley Parkway, creating a neighborhood barrier.

On the east is Gallitan Rd that includes a long stretch of food and retail: Kroger (a nicer one), movie rental, Little Caesar's ($5 Hot and Ready pizza!), Las Maracas, and a lot more.

On the south is Cahal Rd (or Douglas depending), a residential street. And the rest of East Nashville.

On the east is Shelby Park and the Cumberland River.

In the middle is a great new food/retail area called Riverside Village (McGavock/Riverside). It includes a coffee shop, deli, sushi place, pizza place, salon and music school. The same intersection also has a doggy daycare, furniture thrift, soul food restaurant, and a guitar shop.

History

This information from the Images of America: Nashville's Inglewood is interesting:

Settled north of Nashville in 1782, Inglewood began as a farming community on the Cumberland River. Early prominent citizens built many grand homes in the area, including Weakley and Riverwood, which are still standing today. A new community called “Inglewood Place” began in 1908 and churches, schools, and businesses soon followed. Nearly 700 homes were built prior to 1940, but Inglewood saw its heyday following World War II as Nashville’s first modern suburb. Inglewood’s Isaac Litton High School was known throughout Middle Tennessee for its academic excellence, championship sports, and its renowned band, “The Marching 100.” Today people are moving back to Inglewood because of its history and beauty still reflected in the majestic Cumberland River, the numerous natural springs, and varied architecture.
